Comprehensive IOP for Mental Health Treatment in Texas
Men living with severe mental illness require psychiatric intervention and functional skill development for successful community reintegration – The Villa offers both in one program. As our mental health extended-care model, we combine an intensive outpatient program (IOP) with supportive living in Georgetown, Texas – about 30 miles from Austin.
Our treatment provides gender-specific, psychiatry-driven care, including medication management, master’s-level counseling, and evidence-based interventions such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). A compassionate, multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, licensed therapists, peer specialists, and addiction counselors partners with families to support long-term stability, relapse prevention, and a healthy return to everyday life for each client.

Comprehensive Level of Care & Treatment Plans
At The Villa, care extends beyond addressing difficult emotions, building healthier habits, and developing coping skills. The primary focus is on helping you reintegrate into the community, supported by the therapeutic approaches within our extended care setting.
Evidence-Based Individual Therapy & Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
At The Villa, clients engage in individual CBT sessions with master’s-level therapists to address thoughts, emotions, and behaviors while practicing effective coping strategies. By pairing CBT with individual therapy, clients can directly apply insights from therapy into daily routines and competency-development exercises.
CBT is particularly effective for clients experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma-related symptoms, or co-occurring substance use concerns. Our approach promotes both symptom reduction and functional improvements to manage triggers and regulate emotions.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) & Coping Skills Development
Building on individual therapy and CBT, DBT teaches clients to regulate emotions, tolerate distress, and improve interpersonal relationships. Clients practice these skills in both therapy sessions and daily life – by living at The Villa, clients can apply what they learn in real time with guidance and reinforcement from our mental health staff. Integrating these elements strengthens coping strategies, reduces impulsive behaviors, and supports emotional and functional stability.
Medication Management & Psychiatry Services
Our licensed psychiatrists provide comprehensive psychiatric services, including symptom evaluation, diagnosis, and individualized medication planning, while closely monitoring response and side effects throughout treatment.
Medications are prescribed only when clinically necessary and are carefully assessed for safety and appropriateness by our experienced team. Integrated with therapy, this approach supports mood, cognition, and behavior while helping clients engage in daily routines and practical development without disrupting social or functional progress.
Family Therapy & Supportive Care Integration
At Alta Loma, we believe families are a core part of a client’s treatment, which is why we integrate them actively throughout their stay. Family involvement includes weekly support groups, monthly three-day intensives, and ongoing updates from therapists. Families learn communication strategies, problem-solving, and solutions to reinforce coping skills at home, strengthening continuity of care, supporting functional stability, and helping clients translate therapeutic gains into their family dynamics.
Community Reintegration
To enjoy a successful, independent, and fulfilling life once you leave a recovery community, it’s crucial that you have roots in the wider community. As human beings, we’re highly social, and research shows that feeling connected in a meaningful way is as important as food and water.
Our comprehensive team of therapists, addiction experts, case managers, nurses, and mentors forms a fully equipped support bubble around you. We provide the resources, guidance, and structure necessary to get back into work or school. Once you’re back in employment or education, we provide a high level of assistance so you can work through issues that may have interfered with your ability to succeed previously.
Life Skills Groups
Learning how to minimize the symptoms of mental health disorders is about developing coping mechanisms, being mindful, and following a consistent routine. To get the most out of the recovery process, it’s crucial that you learn practical skills and apply what you learn in therapy in the real world.
Being independent doesn’t mean trying to do everything alone. The following life-skills groups can help you learn how to thrive in social situations as well as self-regulate:
- Self-awareness
- Changing thoughts
- Recognizing triggers
- Job-skills training
- Self-sufficiency skills development (cooking, cleaning)
Process Groups
Once you’ve made the amazing step of getting back into work or school, you no longer attend programming after lunch. However, process groups still make up an important part of your weekly program.
In group therapy sessions, a clinician directs the conversation, and participants speak candidly about their experiences. You listen to others and feel what it’s like to be heard without being judged, learning vital empathy and communication skills in the process. Group members also give each other advice and feedback, normalizing the exchange of emotionally driven conversation.
Recovery Groups
These groups provide a safe space for people who’ve been through similar experiences to share and listen. Improving your interpersonal skills and communicating your feelings in a calm manner are indispensable skills in the recovery process – and in life. Every member is encouraged to participate in the most supportive, positive manner possible.
Group leaders and peers can help you set and maintain boundaries, work through conflicts and disagreements in a healthy way, and discuss challenging subjects. The peer support groups you can take part in while at The Villa include NAMI, 12-Step programs, and other peer support groups.
Group Therapy & Individualized Support
Effective care combines individualized clinical work with meaningful peer engagement, especially for those facing severe mental health disorders. Although mental illness can be profoundly isolating, clients at The Villa are surrounded by others who are actively working toward recovery, creating an environment where connection, accountability, and shared experiences.
Therapeutic Group Sessions: Skill-Building & Peer Support
Group sessions provide a clinically guided environment where clients engage with others facing similar mental health challenges, allowing patterns such as social withdrawal, distorted thinking, or interpersonal conflict to surface and be addressed in real time under professional facilitation.
Sessions at The Villa emphasize emotional regulation, communication, accountability, and boundary-setting, while helping clients tolerate discomfort, receive feedback, and rebuild trust in relational settings that often feel unsafe or overwhelming. Repeated peer interaction can reduce isolation, improve insight, and strengthen the ability to function within social circles.
Individual Therapy: Tailored Treatment for Mental Health Challenges
At The Villa, individual therapy allows clients to work closely with master’s-level therapists on clinical issues that are not always accessible in group settings. Many clients carry experiences – such as trauma or deeply personal struggles – that do not surface easily in shared settings, making one-on-one therapy one of our core treatment elements.
Personalized sessions to the client’s diagnosis, level of acuity, and response to care enable individual progress development, supporting meaningful recovery outcomes.
Evidence-Based Behavioral Health Interventions
In addition to a core behavioral health treatment, The Villa incorporates nutrition education and recreational therapy as clinically relevant components of care. Proper nutrition supports neurological function and emotional regulation, while recreational activities help rebuild motivation, social engagement, and tolerance for routine. When aligned with CBT and DBT, these elements create a cohesive treatment model where cognitive, physical, and behavioral interventions reinforce one another.
Outpatient Services & Continuity of Care
Transitioning from The Villa to day-to-day life involves careful planning to ensure clients receive the support they need after discharge. We coordinate housing, psychiatry, therapy, case management, and peer support to promote continuity of care. Local outpatient services remain available post-discharge to help clients reinforce skills, manage symptoms, and navigate real-world challenges as they transition back into the community.
When to Seek Intensive Mental Health Care
At The Villa, we advise families to consider treatment when symptoms interfere with daily functioning, safety, or emotional well-being. If you have implemented coping strategies, but they are no longer effective, we encourage you to take the first step and consider extended care.
Signs Your Loved One May Need
PHP or IOP
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) or intensive outpatient program (IOP) may be appropriate if you observe persistent mood swings, withdrawal from friends or activities, inability to manage daily responsibilities, frequent agitation or irritability, or sudden changes in sleep, appetite, or energy. Early recognition allows families to access intensive care before symptoms worsen, ultimately improving long-term recovery outcomes.
Recognizing High-Risk Symptoms: Self-Harm, Anxiety Disorders, and OCD
Families may notice warning signs such as self-injurious actions, threats, or talk of self-harm, extreme or uncontrollable worry, repetitive compulsions that interfere with functioning, or avoidance of social situations. Immediate attention ensures clients receive prompt, targeted interventions that prioritize safety, emotional regulation, and functional progress.
How Early Intervention Improves
Mental Health Outcomes
Prompt access to intensive programs like The Villa can prevent symptom escalation and support long-term recovery. Catching concerning behaviors or worsening symptoms early allows for mood stabilization, risk reduction, stronger coping skills, and greater functional independence. Acting soon gives your loved one the chance to regain stability, enjoy life more fully, and return to everyday experiences as a healthier and happier person.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
The difference between programs comes down to the level of care and time commitment. A partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers full-day, structured support, an intensive outpatient program (IOP) provides flexible, part-day care, and inpatient treatment delivers 24/7 supervision for those needing the highest level of care.
Our mental health IOP focus on severe mental health disorders, including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar I disorder. We also support individuals with co-occurring substance use as a secondary concern through integrated, evidence-based dual diagnosis care.
Clients follow a long-term, psychiatry-led treatment program (minimum 12 weeks, average ~1 year) built around consistent therapy sessions. Care includes individual therapy, group therapy, CBT, DBT, and ongoing medication management. Our mental health professionals adjust treatment plans as clients stabilize and improve./p>
Medication management plays a key role in stabilizing symptoms and supporting progress in therapy. Our psychiatry team works closely with clients to assess, adjust, and monitor medications as part of comprehensive mental health care. We integrate medication into a broader wellness strategy – not as a standalone solution.
We actively involve each loved one through family therapy and ongoing communication. Families gain tools to support recovery, understand mental health disorders, and rebuild trust. The Villa’s collaborative approach strengthens outcomes and helps clients feel supported beyond treatment and discharge.
Each client’s day may vary depending on their stage in recovery, but generally follows a structured weekday schedule with therapy sessions, life skills groups, wellness activities, meals, and evening recovery or reflection sessions. Residents regularly check in with staff and, once stabilized, can also pursue employment or volunteer opportunities while continuing group participation.
You should consider a higher level of care if a loved one struggles with worsening symptoms, self-harm, or cannot manage daily functioning despite outpatient support. Increased isolation, emotional instability, or lack of progress in outpatient treatment also signal the need for more structured care. Early referrals can significantly improve long-term outcomes.
