Psychiatry-Driven Men’s Mental Health Care for Severe Conditions
At Alta Loma, we focus on men’s health and help men like you manage complex psychiatric conditions. Our clinical team treats an array of mental health conditions, including but not limited to schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar I with psychotic features.
Our multidisciplinary team includes psychiatrists, therapists, master’s-level clinicians, and other mental health professionals and health care providers experienced in treating severe psychiatric conditions.
We perform a family-driven 6+ hour assessment to discuss evidence-based, individualized, and intensive care options for you. You can expect to receive care for 12 weeks to 1 full year and benefit from our community-integrated environment, centered around our sprawling ranch.
We understand the unique challenges that men face when dealing with mental health issues. Our program is carefully designed to provide not just support but a pathway to genuine healing and recovery. We believe in creating a safe, understanding environment where every man can feel heard and respected.
Trustworthiness is at the core of everything we do at Alta Loma. We strive to create an atmosphere of trust and confidentiality. Our staff members are not just highly trained; they are compassionate individuals who genuinely care for each client’s well-being.
A Community-Based Setting That Supports Long-Term Well-Being
At Alta Loma, men experience a calm, natural healing environment that blends reintegration and therapeutic accountability. You can expect a structured daily routine with high staff involvement for ongoing support.
Why Gender-Specific Mental Health Treatment Matters for Men
Societal expectations around masculinity can make it difficult for men to seek mental health support, as many men are taught to see help-seeking as a sign of weakness. For that reason, men may refuse to seek treatment due to painful stigma from others. Untreated addiction or poor mental health can increase the risk of experiencing worsened symptoms, suicidal ideation, or death. However, Alta Loma is a place where men like you can receive serious, structured care without feeling shame.

Treating Mental Health and Substance Use Together
Men’s health can be approached in a variety of ways. At Alta Loma, we coordinate psychiatric oversight and specialize in integrating evidence-based methods. Individualized treatment planning can provide you with comprehensive care that addresses your unique needs. If you are facing a dual diagnosis, you will receive this level of coordinated care to ensure that we treat the root cause of your symptoms – not just the symptoms themselves.
Many men struggling with severe mental health issues also experience substance use or substance abuse, often as a way to cope with distressing symptoms. At Alta Loma, we provide transitional support. Each treatment plan is developed by a collaborative team of clinicians, including LCDC involvement and aftercare support. By coordinating care, we provide greater consistency, reduce risk, and improve treatment outcomes.
Mental health and substance use disorders are closely linked. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), almost half of all residents seeking treatment for substance use also have a diagnosable co-occurring psychiatric disorder.
When residents enter addiction treatment, their mental health problems aren’t always addressed. This can significantly decrease their chance for success. Without proper treatment, bipolar disorder, depression, and other psychiatric concerns can spiral and lead to situations that may be life-threatening.
A Rigorous Admissions and Assessment Process
Upon arrival, our top priority is to stabilize residents and alleviate acute mental health symptoms to prevent psychiatric crises, since sudden or severe symptoms can be highly disruptive and even life‑threatening. Because we tailor medical and psychiatric interventions to each person’s needs, our admissions process can take 6+ hours to ensure a proper fit.
Every resident receives an initial psychiatric evaluation and substance‑abuse assessment, followed by a thorough admissions and assessment process that may include a 5–20 day comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation. From diagnostic clarification to treatment recommendations and appropriate placement, we ensure a carefully coordinated plan before care begins. Our admissions process ensures each individual receives the appropriate level of mental health services, with treatment recommendations coordinated among psychiatrists, therapists, and other health care providers.
Long-Term Support That Evolves With Clinical Progress
Our primary program offers extended care and supportive living to maintain a cohesive experience as our residents progress toward greater independence. While in our program, residents will live in supportive housing at The Ranch, The Villa, or The Cottage and engage in partial hospitalization programming (PHP), intensive outpatient programming (IOP), or outpatient programming (OP) at our clinical office. Some of the proven mental health therapies we apply throughout the recovery process include in-person cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness, meditation, and recreational therapies.
Supportive Living
Here at Alta Loma, we stay with you beyond initial treatment, offering continuum care for those at higher risk. Through outpatient programs, you’ll build independent life skills, prepare for returning to work, and connect with peers who understand your journey. Our team remains available to guide and encourage you as you transition back into daily life.
Extended Care
Our mission at Alta Loma is to provide each individual with the optimal care they deserve for long-term recovery. Therefore, you will receive continued psychiatric oversight and gain structured accountability through built-in life skills.
Primary Care Program — The Ranch
The Ranch in Georgetown, Texas, admits a limited number of individuals, ensuring that you receive the undivided attention and care that you deserve. You can reside on-site in our supportive housing and partake in PHP programming at our nearby clinical facility.
Our most intense mental health program involves 24-hour wake staff and weekly appointments with psychiatrists and therapists. Treatment plans are customized for each resident. Thus, your length of stay is flexible. During your time at The Ranch, you will learn strategies for healthy living, necessary life skills, medication management, and more. We support family involvement and guide close relatives as you progress through recovery. The goal of The Ranch is to move you toward a less structured environment and eventually back to sustainable, independent living through individualized therapy and community integration.

We welcome loved ones by offering weekly support groups and monthly three-day intensives to provide practical help and moments of respite. We share regular therapist updates so you feel informed and included. This partner-based approach ensures treatment decisions are made together with your family. Mental Health Disorders We Treat in Men
We address men’s mental health needs with care that acknowledges symptoms may present differently in men. Our clinicians provide targeted, evidence-based treatment for a range of conditions, including, but not limited to:
- Schizophrenia
- Schizoaffective disorder
- Bipolar disorder with psychosis
- Co-occurring disorders
Why Many Men Delay Seeking Mental Health Treatment
Societal expectations and stigma can pressure men to “tough it out” and internalize emotions. As a result, most men feel hesitant to seek mental health treatment in fear of being perceived as weak or emasculated. For that reason, we understand that moving forward with care can be a vulnerable next step and are sensitive to the concerns of men seeking help, offering private and confidential spaces for men to open up and address their mental health concerns.
Preparing Men for Sustainable Independence
Our team provides practical help with housing setup, outpatient coordination, psychiatry and therapy, case management, and peer support so you transition out of treatment with a clear plan. These services are designed to promote stability, self-reliance, and independence. Recovery also focuses on improving physical health, developing healthy routines, and incorporating physical activity to support overall mental wellness.
Signs It May Be Time for Long-Term Mental Health Treatment
It can be hard to notice the early warning signs of psychological distress in yourself or a loved one; when symptoms persist or worsen, long-term treatment may be needed. Our team specializes in identifying and addressing these signs to support sustained recovery and improved well-being. Signs you might benefit from long-term mental health treatment include:
- Experiencing suicidal ideations or worsening symptoms of depression
- Noticeable changes in energy level or sleep
- Persistent physical symptoms related to stress
- Engaging in risky behavior or substance misuse
- Ignoring warning signs of worsening mental health

A Calm Setting Designed for Serious Clinical Work
At Alta Loma, you’ll receive compassionate clinical care in a calm, distraction-free setting that supports focused healing. Our private spaces let you step away from daily stressors and concentrate on recovery.
FAQs
How long is men’s mental health treatment?
The length of treatment will depend on your medical history and individual needs.
When should a man seek professional mental health help?
If your mental or physical symptoms interfere with daily life, such as work, relationships, or overall well-being, this is usually an indication to seek professional help. Early intervention improves outcomes, so reach out when symptoms persist, worsen, or cause concern.
Why is treatment long-term?
Men often face complex mental health challenges that benefit from longer-term behavioral health support to achieve stability; these issues frequently overlap (trauma, substance use, medical conditions) and require coordinated care and careful adjustment of therapy and medications.
Lasting improvement takes time to assess and treat, learn and practice new coping skills, repair relationships, and change routines, while ongoing care allows for monitoring, preventing setbacks, and tailoring treatment as needs evolve.
Is family involvement required?
Family involvement is not required but encouraged. When families participate in care, it can lessen feelings of isolation and provide important emotional support that helps sustain long-term healing.
Why are men at higher risk for suicide?
Men are at higher risk for suicide for various reasons, including social norms that make it harder to ask for help and higher rates of substance use and untreated mental health conditions. Isolation, relationship, or work stress can also increase risk, which is why early support matters. If you or a loved one is experiencing suicidal thoughts, resources like the 988 Crisis Lifeline and other suicide prevention hotlines can provide immediate support.
How does Alta Loma support both mental and physical health?
We go beyond the “traditional treatment programs” for mental health by providing a structured environment where residents can find emotional and psychological stability.
What makes Alta Loma appropriate for severe mental illness?
We provide high-quality, proven transformational care programs, offering a comprehensive array of tools and support to help you sustain your new healthy lifestyle.

Who is a good fit for this program?
Our program is a good fit for adult men experiencing persistent, worsening, and severe mental health symptoms that interfere with daily life.
