Everybody is different and each of us require different methods of treatment to solve our mental, emotional, and health problems. There are a variety of early treatment options for individuals struggling with substance use disorder (SUD) ranging in duration, cost, residency options, and treatment philosophy. Before you consult a mental health professional for advice, you should do preliminary research to find a rehab program that suits your needs.

Inpatient Programs

Individuals enrolled in inpatient rehab programs leave their homes to reside at the rehabilitation facility. Short-term programs typically last 30 days and long-term patients often stay for 60 days or longer. Some facilities allow individuals to graduate only after receiving approval from a therapist or other professional and there is no date of departure scheduled for the patient upon arrival.

These programs yield higher rates of success than outpatient programs. Access to resources, scheduled activities, and a supportive community of peers and professionals provides an environment more conducive to recovering from SUD and comorbid disorders than a hybridized lifestyle afforded by outpatient treatment.

Inpatient programs are typically more expensive, however, and the choice to leave your home to reside in a rehab facility may disrupt relationships in your personal and professional spheres. Consider the cost and time commitment of an inpatient program before continuing research.

Outpatient Programs

Those enrolled in outpatient programs live at home and attend regular treatment at an outside facility. These programs allow individuals in recovery to lead a similar lifestyle to the one they lead before treatment and, for patients who are engaged in jobs or other activities that cannot be postponed for the duration of an inpatient program, this freedom to resume certain elements of their routine is beneficial.

Some facilities are adjoined to hospitals and can provide medically aided detoxification. Unlike inpatient programs, outpatient facilities are not open at all times, thereby limiting patient access to resources. Rates of relapse are higher in graduates from outpatient programs, but many do achieve sobriety through treatment.

Costs of these programs are often much lower than the costs of inpatient programs, making them more appealing to those who cannot afford residential care. Consider the loose structure and continuation of the pre-recovery routine before continuing research.
